My Story

Austin was diagnosed with pre B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in April of 2007. The resiliency of our has little boy has amazed us all as Austin continues to tolerate chemotherapy, steroids, spinal taps, and bone marrows in order to win his fight against cancer! Despite his treatment plan Austin continues to be an active little boy and loves playing lego batman on the PSP, playing board games with the whole family, and loves superhero anything! After enduring treatment for 16 months, Austin relapsed in September 2008. He underwent a stem cell transplant in March 2009 only to relapse a few months later. Austin endured even more chemo and procedures for the rest of 2009 and in January 2010, ended up in PICU with sepsis and encephalopathy (swelling of the brain). As one last hope, Austin endured an experimental haploidentical stem cell transplant in April 2010 at the American Family Children's Hospital, UW Madison but suffered with severe graft vs. host disease which ultimately took him to Heaven on July 1, 2010. Watching our child endure leukemia has brought us on an incredible journey. But Austin was so brave, he inspired our whole family. Cancer was the only life that Austin knew. Austin will always be our little superhero! You're welcome to read our journey at: www.caringbridge.org/visit/austinricci
