My Story

Micah was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma on September 23, 2013. He was 9 years old. We were shocked! We went for an MRI because he had been having nausea, headaches and once a week vomiting for 8 weeks. Shortly after the scan a neurosurgeon pulled us into a quiet area and told us that Micah had a golf ball sized tumour in the posterior fossa of his brain. He was immediately admitted. 1 week later he had a 6 hour brain surgery to remove the tumour. After a week of waiting, the pathology report came back. Even though they got the tumour the cancer cells had already spread beyond the tumour. He was diagnosed with stage 4 Medulloblastoma. Micah had 1 month to heal from his surgery and then began 6 weeks of High Dose Cranial Spinal Radiotherapy. This was followed by a 6 week break to help his body to heal a bit. Then he began 6 months of intense chemotherapy. At this point he was admitted for 5 days ever 4 weeks. It was very hard on his body and he was sick a lot. He had low platelets a couple of times and so he needed platelet transfusions. Micah has had to go through a lot. More then any child should ever go through. His body still has so much healing to be done and many things will never be what they would have been prior to treatment. We celebrate with him that he is 1 year post treatment and pray that his MRI's continue to show No Evidence of Disease. Thank you for supporting him and the more than 300,000 kids worldwide who will be diagnosed with cancer this year. By sharing the gifts of your time, talent and money with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, you're supporting research to give all kids with cancer a better chance for a cure.
