Leo is a two year old battling infantile fibrosarcoma since birth (8/14/21). After Leo was born they noticed a very large mass to his left leg. They originally thought it was a hemangioma but after many days in the Nicu during Covid and a few scans later we had no answers. We saw a dermatologist who specialized in hemangiomas and she suspected it to be something else and said a biopsy was needed. While we waited to get the biopsy a few weeks out Leo’s weight dropped quickly and his pediatrician was concerned so between her and the dermatologist they arranged for us to get admitted through Luries ER to get the biopsy asap. The admission took forever and we finally were able to get the biopsy completed the next day. Once the results came back we knew something was wrong, the regular hospital team stepped aside and the oncology team came in and informed us on 9/10/21 that Leo’s mass was in fact a cancer called infantile fibrosarcoma. We stayed two weeks and started chemo right away we continued this treatment weekly through November only to find out the chemo did very minimal chance of any to his tumor. We did receive good news that he qualified for a chemo (from his extensive biopsy genetics) that would be taken orally and would target his tumor directly. After insurance approval his port was removed December 2021 and we started his next treatment from home in January 2022 and have been on this medicine since. It’s has a been a rough road but we are hoping to get his tumor shrunk down enough to have surgery and remove it.
