Thank you for supporting me and the more than 300,000 kids worldwide who will be diagnosed with cancer this year. My name is Lucas and I was diagnosed with B-Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-ALL) a month short of my 7th birthday, on June 18th, 2023. I had a cold a month or so earlier and shortly after I started to experience pain in my hip severe enough to require pain medicine. I was taken to my pediatrician for a check up and it was determined I most likely was experiencing growing pains. Two weeks later the pain was worsening so my family reached out to my pediatrician again. They determined it could be Transient Synovitis, inflammation of my joints after a virus. My family didn’t want to risk missing something and my doctor ordered the first set of labs/blood work. A week later we received over a dozen calls from my doctor and nurse asking for additional blood work to narrow it down, and “hopefully eliminate major concerns.” Our family was camping, so once we returned to civilization (on June 18th -Father’s Day), my parents took me to Primary Children’s Hospital for additional blood work and ultrasounds. That night, around 9:00 pm, my parents received the call no parent should ever get. I, their beautiful 6 year old son, was being diagnosed with Leukemia and needed to be admitted at Primary Children’s for immediate treatment.
The next few days were a whirlwind of emotions, tests, information, unanswered questions, and I kept wondering when I'd get to go home and “go back to normal.” My family and I are grateful for Primary Children’s Hospital and the incredible Oncology team caring for me. We are grateful for the Family and Friends who immediately jumped in to make this transition to “our new normal” manageable. But mostly my family is grateful to our Heavenly Father for making me a brave, strong, cheerful child, who is facing this challenge head on with a big toothless smile on my face and a heart full of love and courage.
