Please join the brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon as we raise money to find cures for childhood cancers to give survivors long, healthy lives. This year marks the 10th anniversary since our first event and with that, more than $320,000 raised and donated to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. This number has ranked us as the top Collegiate Shaving Event Nationally by St. Baldricks for over 7 years now and the top Philanthropy on Drexel’s Campus.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization other than the U.S. government. We coordinate our signature head-shaving events and other fundraisers, giving thousands of volunteers worldwide a chance to raise money to support lifesaving childhood cancer research. St. Baldrick's events are the largest volunteer-driven fundraising opportunity benefitting pediatric cancer research.
This year’s Head Shaving Event will be unique as we plan to host at least one honored kid at the event along with esteemed speakers. With the carnival theme set in stone, one of our goals is to celebrate the lives of these courageous children. It will be located at the Drexel Rec Center, located at 33rd and Market Streets in the afternoon time frame. The event is a carnival open to the public, and it will include music, guest speakers and our very first honored kid, inflatables and carnival games, raffles, food, and of course, the head shaving.
I am proud to announce that for the 10 year raising money for The. St. Baldrick's Foundation, SigEp Drexel will be honoring a young lady fighting a ten-month battle with Ewing's Sarcoma, miss Cameron McCarthy. In May of last year, 7-year old Cameron's parents heard the words that 43 families here every day, "Your child has cancer".
The past year, the local community rallied to support Cameron and her family in her fight, forming a powerhouse team known as "#TeamCameron". Members sport trademark blue bracelets that encourage Cameron and others kids battling cancer to "fight like a girl".
SigEp Drexel was humbled and honored to meet Cameron this past week and officially join #TeamCameron and for Cameron to sign up to support our St. Baldrick's team. The energy and drive we see in Cameron is an inspiration for us to learn more, work harder and succeed in meeting our goals so that in the future no child gets sidelined by cancer.
