I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

I shaved to raise money for childhood cancer research

I myself have been a cancer patient, and I am a mother. Surviving cancer made me fearless and being a mom taught me compassion.  Throughout the months of my own treatment eight years ago, my constant thought was "It's OK, it's me, it's not my child, I can handle this." I cannot imagine what it must be like to be the mother of a cancer patient, and so I will continue to shave for St. Baldrick's so that one day no parent will hear those words from a doctor that begin with "I'm sorry to tell you, BUT..."

In the beginning I thought I would shave my head once (2009) or maybe twice (2011) or maybe just during odd years (2013).. but at the 2013 Rockville Center event I listened as a young cancer survivor spoke about her experiences during her treatment as a baby -- and it reminded me of everything I had been thru during my own treatment, the horrible horrible stuff that you try to forget and put behind you -- but I had been a strong and otherwise-healthy adult, while she had been just a baby. It made me so angry -- it still does -- that on that day I realized I couldn't NOT do this every year. We CAN we WILL we MUST beat cancer.

Cancer has gotten away for far too long with stealing lives and futures. When a child's life is taken by cancer, we all, everyone of us, lose the bright shining future of that child -- and we will never know the discoveries, creations, talents, advancements, etc.,  that child could have given to the world! To me, that is simply unacceptable. We need to slam the door on cancer, and we need to do it NOW.

So once again this year I'm shaving my head to raise money for childhood cancer research! Did you know that kids' cancers are different from adult cancers? It's true. And childhood cancer research is extremely underfunded. So I decided to do something about it by raising money for cures.

Now I need your help! Will you make a donation? Every dollar makes a difference for the thousands of infants, children, teens, and young adults fighting childhood cancers.
