Friends, family, and supporters of the fight to cure cancer:
My name is Kayla - I'm a 1st year Medical Student at the University of Ottawa, and I have decided to shave my head on April 10th, as part of the "Smiling Over Sickness" event to be held at the University of Ottawa's Medical Campus.
Upon beginning my studies at the University of Ottawa, I joined a program through the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) whereby I would be set up with a child undergoing chemotherapy for childhood cancer. The CHEO buddy program didn't bring me just any child; it brought me Mitchell Jones.
The dawn of 2013 was pretty grim for little Mitchell Jones. This beautiful, high-spirited, and optimistic six-year-old boy with Down's Syndrome, known to family and friends as “Mighty Mitch,” has been battling high-risk acute lymphoblast leukemia at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) since September. Two weeks ago, Mitchell was started on interim maintenance chemotherapy; an aggressive form of treatment which has brought him excessive hair loss, fluid retention, hemorrhaging from the mouth and nose, and a complete absence of appetite.
I visit Mitchell at CHEO 2-3 times a week. I have become very close with Mitchell and his mom, and have grown to love them as family.
Mitchell doesn't talk much, and we often use sign language to communicate. But he calls me "Kahlah" and often follows this up with a brilliant, bright smile, which warms my heart and brings tears to my eyes.
In order to show my support for Mitchell's fight, I will be donating my hair to "Wigs for Kids" - an organization which specializes in making childhood wigs that are available FREE to any Canadian child in need.
But I am taking this initiative a step further.
Through the "St. Baldrick's Foundation", I will be shaving my head. While the little bits and pieces of hair that remain on my head (following the donation-based cutting) are not used in wig making, I am going this extra mile as a symbol for my support for the Mighty Mitch and his wonderful family.
Please sponsor me and help me meet and even exceed my goal. This is not for me, but for the children, like Mitchell, who are spending their childhood days in a Hospital bed battling childhood cancer, when they should be outside making snow angels and learning to climb the monkey-bars.
Thank you for your love and support.
One day we will say "It's JUST cancer".
But for now, we say "It's JUST hair".
