Yup...I'm going to do it...I'm going to shave my head as my meager contribution towards a cure for children's cancer and in turn, for all cancers.
This year I have seen friends suffer with their parents and siblings while they've endured treatment, I have watched a dear friend battle Leukemia, and my own sister-in-law is in the fight of her life at the return of metasticized breast cancer.
We can't let this disease win.
I'm participating because I'm not a beauty queen...like many of the women we usually see advertising St. Baldrick's Day in the media. I'm just like the everyday men, women and children who get this disease and lose their hair during treatment. I expect to be walking through the store after the shaving and see the uncomfortable looks and the unasked questions. "Is she sick?" "Is she dying?" I'm sure it will be an important education for me as much as everyone else.
Giving up my hair to raise money and awareness is OK with me, especially when the awareness being raised is my own.
